Population is an asset to a country when she can turn it into a productive human resource. But it becomes a problem for a country when she fails to provide them with the basic needs of life like food, clothing, shelter and education.
Bangladesh is an overpopulated country. In fact, she is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Tho density of population in our country is about 1103 per square kilometre. The current growth rate of population in Bangladesh is l.l. Hence, overpopulation has become a great burden for Bangladesh.
There are certain causes of overpopulation in Bangladesh. Firstly, the illiterate people are not aware of family planning. Besides, due to social and religious superstitions, many people are averse to adopt family planning. Moreover, polygamy, early marriage, illiteracy and the hope for male children are the main causes of overpopulation in Bangladesh.
Population problem is, in fact, the root cause of many other problems. Due to. overpopulation, problems like food, shelter and healthcare are becoming worsening. Increasingly, it is becoming harder to meet these demands. This is also causing malnutrition, environment pollution, unemployment and widening poverty. We all know, unemployment causes frustration and unrest in the society. As a result, law and order, situation is deteriorating. Overpopulation creates much pressure on all sectors of economy agriculture, service, industry. As a consequence, we see overcrowding everywhere in buses, trains, schools, colleges, etc. All these have adverse impacts on our life and society.
In order to check the problem of overpopulation, we have to do two things. Firstly, proper planning must be done to tackle the issue; secondly, the existing population has to be turned into human resources. In addition, general people, especially those who live in slums. should be made aware of the curse of overpopulation. They should be encouraged to adopt family planning. No family should have more than two children. Early marriage must bc abolished. The unemployed should be provided with vocational training so that they can turn into human resources. This trained manpower can easily be exported to different countries.
In conclusion. over population is a great hindrance to all our development efforts. But it can bc checked if the government and the conscious people are determined to solve it.
