Deshi Rickshaw Puller

Rickshaws have been a common mode of transportation in Bangladesh for over a century. The rickshaw pullers, also known as "van pullers," are typically from low-income backgrounds and have limited education. Many of them start working as rickshaw pullers at a young age to support their families financially. The work is physically demanding and they may have to pull the rickshaw for long hours in hot and crowded conditions. Despite the difficult working conditions, many rickshaw pullers continue to work as it is one of the few job opportunities available to them.

Rickshaw pulling is a challenging and grueling job, which requires a lot of physical exertion. The pullers have to navigate through the congested streets of Bangladesh, often in extreme weather conditions. The rickshaws are lightweight and do not provide any protection from the sun or rain, leaving the pullers exposed to the elements. The long hours of work and the physical demands of the job often lead to various health problems, including back pain, muscle strain, and respiratory issues.

Rickshaw pullers are also vulnerable to accidents while on the job. The fast-paced and crowded streets of Bangladesh can be dangerous, and rickshaw pullers are at risk of getting hit by cars, buses, or motorcycles. The lack of safety regulations and oversight also makes the job more hazardous.

Despite the challenges, many rickshaw pullers continue to work as it is one of the few job opportunities available to them. The job does not require any formal education or training, making it accessible to individuals from low-income backgrounds. Rickshaw pulling also provides a sense of independence and self-sufficiency, as the pullers are able to earn their own income and support their families.

However, many rickshaw pullers continue to live in poverty and face challenges such as poor health and limited access to education and other resources. The low income and long hours of work leave little time for education or personal development. Many of the pullers are also unable to afford proper housing, healthcare, or nutrition. This lack of proper nutrition and healthcare further exacerbates their poor health conditions and makes them more vulnerable to illnesses.

Rickshaw pullers also face social stigma and discrimination. They are often viewed as being from a lower social class and are not treated with the same respect as other professions. This social stigma also extends to their families and children, who may face discrimination in school and in their communities.

Over the years, there have been efforts to improve the lives of rickshaw pullers in Bangladesh. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been working to provide education, healthcare, and other services to rickshaw pullers and their families. Some NGOs have also been working to improve the working conditions of rickshaw pullers by providing them with protective gear and training on safe driving practices. These training programs also help them to become more efficient, and as a result, they can earn more money, which can help them to improve their living conditions.

The government has also taken steps to improve the lives of rickshaw pullers. In the past, the government has implemented programs to provide financial assistance to rickshaw pullers and their families. However, these efforts have been limited and have not been able to fully address the challenges faced by rickshaw pullers.

In recent years, there has been a growing push to phase out rickshaws and replace them with more modern and efficient modes of transportation. However, this process has been slow and rickshaws continue to be a common sight on the streets of Bangladesh. This is partly due to the lack of alternative job opportunities for the rickshaw pullers
